The acclaimed filmmaker's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, is a film audiences have been anticipating since its announcement. It firmly sits as one of the most awaited films of 2026. In a festive surprise, a preview has now been released, though it's hampered due to the platform's low-quality encoding—maybe illustrating why Nolan initially kept the preview exclusive to cinemas.
The Initial Look of the Stellar Ensemble
The debut footage showcases Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. During an emotional scene, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise his safe homecoming, to which he respond by asking what happens if he cannot. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look of the mythical one-eyed giant, whose flock are taken by the hero and his men during their arduous journey.
Adapted from a foundational pillar of Western literature, The Odyssey follows the epic journey of the legendary King of Ithaca. After his triumph at Troy, as told within the companion epic, the king faces an extended and hazardous road home.
Legendary Obstacles with an All-Star Cast
On his travels, the hero encounters countless challenges and mythical beings. These include the witch-goddess Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, and the deceptive Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, his sworn oath is to overcome anything to reunite with his wife and son in Ithaca.
The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway are Charlize Theron portraying the shrewd goddess, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Tale of Many Adaptations
Homer's epic has inspired many reinterpretations throughout history. These range from modern retellings to a 1999 ballet. There has even been a stage musical adaptation called Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a nine-album collection.
A full-length preview was long awaited since the film's announcement and a short teaser clip which was initially shown exclusively in theaters. That footage later made its way onto the internet soon after.
