Unveiling an Bizarre Steam Demo: Playing as a Turdy Character in a Mission to Reach the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and gamers have encountered plenty of engaging creations from small studios. Yet, one stands out for its unconventional concept. Called Unko Technica, this retro-inspired side-scrolling game features a character that is literally a piece of poop trying to make its way to a commode. For those curious, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."
Player controls is simple: just use a one button to leap. Across one hundred fifty challenges, battle boss fights and unlock a market to purchase customizations for your fecal avatar.
Plan your movements with caution, since one wrong move forces starting over. Jump using floating orbs to propel the poop to new heights, traverse crumbling surfaces, and activate buttons to reveal new areas. Earn coins and use them on more difficult stages as things ramps up.
Visually, the demo shows off vibrant environments and catchy music score. Its minimalist visual style of morphing geometric shapes may remind fans of beloved games like Earthbound.
Even though hard to recall similar titles where you play as a dung character, gaming have long incorporated scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, players craft throwables from protagonist excrement. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize dung as fertilizer. Unsurprisingly, this theme shows up a lot in Obsidian's role-playing game The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its goofy idea, Unko Technica has already earned significant accolades, like taking top honors at Bandai Namco's GYAAR Studio in 2023. A playable preview is available now on Steam, with the complete version planned to arrive on computers this November.
