Two Victims Identified in Brown University Incident as Police Continue Manhunt for Killer.
Both young individuals who lost their lives in the recent tragic incident at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their killer carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.
Cook was vice-president of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences online, stating: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”
An International Student
The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male detained in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”
Ongoing Concerns
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our public”.
The shooter opened fire inside a lecture hall in the building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a police source told the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that searched the inn recovered two firearms and magazines when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.
The Wounded Victims
Regarding the nine injured, one student was allowed to go home, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
An educational institution, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Further Tributes
Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, companions, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his promising future.”
