The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, every region of the state is enduring drought conditions. This milestone arrives after challenging years marked by below-average rain that worsened fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.
A Map Reveals No Dryness
A recent update from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This shift came after weeks of heavy precipitation that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a weather expert.
After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays
The path to this point involved powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, resulting in extensive inundation, blackouts, and fatalities. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January eliminated those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
Yet, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean complete water security. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the average for this date.
This snowpack, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for the year ahead. Water officials point out that it is not yet time to make predictions for the months ahead.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health during the coming seasons.
