Brutish, Intimidating, Hegemonic: the Comeback of the Negative U.S. Stereotype
For decades, successive administrations has sought to clear the United States of its image as a domineering, hegemonic nation. But with his boastful, repeatedly brutish behavior toward global partners, Donald Trump has rapidly reawakened that idea. In his administration, the Ugly American is returned.
Assertive Exercise of Power
He achieved this by wielding US power in aggressive and presumptuous ways – by attacking other countries’ policies and then warning to penalize them if they refuse to yield to his demands. His actions represent exactly what international law states government officials shouldn’t be doing. On multiple occasions intervened into foreign nations' internal matters, pressuring their officials, criticizing their policies and ignoring their sovereignty. Too often, he views foreign nations as vassals of the United States (and of his ego).
Background of the "Ugly American"
The expression “the Ugly American” was popularized by a book from 1958 with an identical heading; it described the lack of awareness and ineptness of American envoys who frequently didn’t speak the tongue where they were stationed and infrequently engaged with the locals there. As decades passed, this phrase was frequently employed to characterize unaware and overbearing American travelers and insensitive and overbearing US policies toward foreign countries.
Global Involvement
He has behaved like an Ugly American in multiple situations. He intervened in the domestic matters of Brazil by all but ordering it to drop the criminal charges of its conservative former president (and close associate) the Brazilian ex-president for scheming to orchestrate a takeover to resume leadership. After Brazil refused the case – the ex-president was convicted and given a term to 27 years in incarceration – he enacted a half-rate duty on products from Brazil.
In recent times, he has acted as the Negative, even Unhinged, American toward America's neighbor when he grew outraged after seeing a television ad, funded by the province of Ontario, that included segments of a Ronald Reagan speech opposing import taxes. As a response, he enacted an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods. This action increased the displeasure of Canadians who were previously upset about Trump’s absurd idea to turn Canada into the 51st state.
Trump has also tried to pressure the South American nation. He declared the US would terminate assistance to that country after its leader, the national leader, objected that the American forces had targeted a vessel from Colombia and resulted in a casualty as part of Trump’s campaign of striking ships allegedly transporting drugs. Utilizing unpleasant, tactless rhetoric, he labeled the nation's leader an “drug trade figurehead”.
Military Threats
Concurrently come his on-again, off-again intimidations to conduct defense operations against Venezuela. This evokes memories of America's blatantly expansionist interventions in, such as, Vietnam, the Caribbean island and the Middle Eastern state, with the mid-century takeover removing a leftist government leader. The nation's leader, the president, is corrupt, oppressive and autocratic, and rigged a vote, but defense action would be a regression to the most negative periods of unpleasant American policies.
EU Affairs
Furthermore, he has intervened in the European Union’s affairs. During a period when digital networks is filled with so many misinformation that it makes it hard for elected administrations to function, even survive, the European Union has understandably mandated social media platforms to remove deceptions and other disinformation. But he has condemned the EU online rules, claiming that it shows bias toward U.S. digital corporations. His administration has frustrated the European bloc by warning to implement fresh taxes and restrict the visas of some EU officials.
His negative approach policies have done serious injury to the U.S. perception abroad
Political Intervention
He has inappropriately intervened in Argentina’s politics by declaring he would provide a $40bn bailout, but could withdraw the financial support if the party of the conservative leader of Argentina, the Argentine president, failed to secure victory congressional races. “In case of his loss, we are refuse to be supportive with the country,” he declared. Millei’s party was victorious, amid interfering the U.S. leader claiming partial responsibility, saying: “He had significant help from our administration.”
The second-in-command, the vice-president, interfered in the political affairs of Germany by condemning established political groups for building a “firewall” against permitting far-right parties such as the Alternative for Germany into a governing coalition. During an address in the past weeks to Israel’s Knesset, he intervened in Israeli political affairs in an remarkable way, encouraging Israel’s president to forgive the head of government, the Israeli leader, on the ethical violations against him.
International Organization Address
In the lengthy rant to the United Nations gathering in September, he tried to portray himself as International Chief. He directed the 193 countries in the U.N. to abandon their global warming strategies, declaring concerns about climate change are {“the greatest con job
