Both Deceased Students Revealed in Brown University Shooting as Police Persist in Search for Gunman.
Two students who were killed in Saturday’s tragic incident in Providence were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their assailant carried on following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect questioned in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies on social media, remarking: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”
The Second Victim
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, according to relatives.
His name was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.
What Happened
An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was being released.
“We have a murderer out there,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”
Ongoing Concerns
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our city”.
The gunman began shooting inside a room in the engineering building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a police source informed the media outlet.
Officers that searched the hotel recovered two handguns and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was arrested, as was reported.
Those Hurt
Of the nine hurt, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.
An educational institution, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
More Condolences
Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, companions, and peers and lament the passing of his bright future.”
National Context
The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in this year, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
