Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
